Chatbot or AI agent: differences and which one your company needs

They are used as synonyms, but they are not: the chatbot converses, the agent acts. How to choose based on your case.

"Chatbot" and "AI agent" are used as if they were the same thing, and that confusion leads companies to buy too much or too little. The difference is simple: the chatbot converses; the agent also executes tasks.

What a chatbot does

It answers inquiries with your company's information: hours, prices, requirements, FAQs. With artificial intelligence it understands natural language and hands off to a person when it cannot resolve the request. It is the ideal entry point for customer service.

What an AI agent does

Everything above, plus actions on your systems: checking the real status of an order, logging the inquiry in the CRM, generating a document, coordinating steps in a process. The agent does not only inform: it resolves.

Which one you need

  • If your problem is repetitive inquiries: start with a chatbot.
  • If you also need the system to do things (query, record, notify): you need an agent.
  • If you are not sure: start with the chatbot and evolve to an agent when the case justifies it. The path is incremental.
